This week, ESPN's Cris Carter spoke out regarding Plaxico Burress and his E:60 interview, which airs in its entirety tonight at 7pm. Carter talks about the lack of remorse Burress shows and how the sports world praised him for his athletic ability as early as childhood, which possibly led up to the bad decisions plax has made in the past.
Cris Carter and I tend to have the same thought process, and this video is an extension of both of us having almost identical ways of thinking. I really haven't spoke on the Burress situation, mainly because everyone else in the sports world has, but I think Carter is dead-on in this segment. Plax didn't take his job seriously, and his larger-than-life personality led up to the events that now has Burress ready to serve a 2-year sentence.
Whether you agree with the sentence or not, I think most of us can agree that his decision making was poor and was "smelling himself" when it came to what he had to do as a WR on a professional football team.
Once again, Carter and I are on the same page. I couldn't agree with him more. And I'm glad someone isn't biting their tongue about it.
I totally agree, but my question to all the old NFL players is this. Why not reach out to these young guys and mentor them? Our society has gotten away from each one, teach one. Help these brothers out...how you were raised can't continue to be an excuse.
I agree @PigskinLovingLady, just like Tony Dungy is helping Michael Vick in his situation, these older guys don't care, and I believe its because they are jealous about how much these guys are making compared to when they were playing. The NFL also has a rookie symposium to these new players thats supposed to help them with issues. I think that no matter what other people try to do to help, these are grown men and they are going to do whatever they want. These players need to be held accountable for what they do, no questions asked.
This is a good post, I agree these players have to be held accountable for their actions. It's great that there is a rookie symposium and mentors like Tony Dungy helping out but these men are going to do what they want to do anyway. If any of them are serious about getting help and turning his life around then they know how to contact Mr. Dungy or a sports psychologist.
Plaxico has been in the NY papers quite often for other actions leading up to the self-shooting, none of them positive. Some people I know made excuses for Burress talking about the area is probably dangerous and he wouldn't know what the club is about. Oh puh-lease! I live in NYC and I've been to LQ many times, the area is safe and decent and the club, though it's not Pascha it isn't a dive either. He knew his license in Fl was suspended and these guys KNOW that NY state gun laws are one of the toughest in the nation. so come on... there's no excuse, not only that, dude totally ignored the safety on the gun! I'm sorry he ticked me off with that piece of stupidity and now I'm riled up again! LOL
PLL, great point. I agree. Like MK Rob said, they do have the Rookie Symposiums but you have to want that info.
GelaTrish, great post, I totally agree with you. LOL sorry for ruffling the feathers again
Great post. I love with Cris brings to the table. Tony Dungy can't save 'em all...and most of them don't listen at the rookie symposium. A lot of them are broke by the time their careers are over due to poor money management, drama with females who mean them harm, false friends, violence, etc. It's so sad...the bad seem to outshine the good in the NFL who lead normal, quiet lives off the field!!
Sorry, that was supposed to say "I love WHAT Cris brings to the table."
I am totally of the same mindset... I will say, however, that often times others play into the actions of these folks. Yeah, I know everyone is responsible for ones' self, but if everyone tells you for x amount of years that you're great, you're gonna start to believe it.
On another note, I'm so glad to find other sites where women aren't sports' challenged. Although my niche is different, it still speaks to loving and knowing about sports. I'll have to add you to my blogroll... if you don't mind.
