This morning on Twitter, I made a joke to a fellow follower, regarding a spring football league. I joked that the USFL should make a comeback. I was then given a link by my fellow tweeter @billionairebank. The link??? A website calling themselves the New USFL. And it had the following statement listed:
REDONDO BEACH, CA – The New United States Football League announces plans to launch a professional spring football league to begin in the Spring of 2011. The league’s goal is to have 10-12 teams in the first year of play with teams throughout the United States.
“We have a strong sense of history and believe that the marketplace has demonstrated the desire to have ‘Spring football’,” said New USFL Founder/President MICHAEL DWYER. “The USFL had a strong connection with many of its fans and we hope to re-ignite that passion and pick up where the others left off.”
The league will play traditional stadium-played football with most of the rules being based from the original USFL concepts. The league is also in the process of recruiting its staff and securing sponsorships with announcements to follow in the near future.
“Other leagues have proven that the talent is out there,” Dwyer said. “We want to be the Spring destination of the ultimate football fan who can’t wait for the Fall.”
The league will announce cities that will play in 2011 at a later date, but Dwyer said that former USFL locations would receive strong consideration when selecting where franchises will be placed.
If this is, in fact true, I had no idea this was coming back into existence.
Some folks think this may be watering down the love of the game of football, I see it as merely an option for the spring. Let's be honest, football is America's past time now, and I would think there would be a lot of happy football fans that could see their favorite sport all year around, if they could. If you aren't a huge baseball fan, this could be your go-to sport until the NFL starts back up again.
I recently watch the ESPN 30 for 30 special on the original USFL, and it was a very interesting documentary. I wasn't too familiar with the league because I was too young to remember it. And other than my father's personal accounts on the league, I didn't have a general knowledge of the USFL. But the ESPN special did bring to light, how the USFL brought in high profile players to build their league that started with instant success, as well as showing their demise after their 3rd season. Here's a clip of it, if you missed it:
I'm definitely intrigued to see is someone can compete with the NFL. While I love football, the NFL has way too many rules and awful officiating. It's really starting to push me towards college football, the worse it gets.
I hope this is true. I'd like to see where this goes. Good luck to the NEW USFL. I'll definitely be watching.

JUST A GREAT POST! as usual
we REALLY need to get the NFL competition to wake them up from destroying the game yearly with more bad rules...especially carrying the QB & castrating the D
Notice many of the folks who change the rules never played the game? Tagliabue was a basketball player who made the NFL the NBA with pads...and Goodell is even worse
the first and fourth AFL had impact, as did the AAFC...and the USFL / WFL sort of did OK
this new UFL is the second USFL
hope they hang in there...so many good players not playing and other leagues have shown their talents well
saw a few UFL games in '09 and interviewed a coach (ex-Eagles OT Jerry Sisemore (about my Chris Hanburger mission on my Crazy Canton Cuts site)who was driving in his car from Texas to Florida to be a OL coach on a team...he was really excited...got me even more so
btw - congrats on your Ravens :)
