Master P: Tell Us Why You Mad Son!

Apparently, Master P is about everything New Orleans- including his Saints! So when rapper Lil' Wayne said that he was rooting for the Vikings prior to the NFC Championship game (Weezy says he's a diehard Favre fan), it didn't sit right to Mr. Miller that his fellow NO native wasn't cheering for the home team. Master P said the following:

"The comment Lil Wayne made about New Orleans Saints losing to the Minnesota Vikings, made no sense to me as a New Orleans native," explained P. "This is our hope as a city after surviving Hurricane Katrina. This team should bring us together as people. I understand that he has the right to have his own opinion and comment or even root for another team if he wants to. It's just disappointing to hear this coming from a brother who was born and raised in New Orleans, made money off his music representing the city of New Orleans, talking about it in his lyrics.

"I'm from Uptown New Orleans and I don't care who the Saints play against, how good the opposing team is, nor what the odds are against them. I would never go against my team, the New Orleans Saints, or root for an opposing team playing against them. We've been waiting to get to the Super Bowl for 40 years and if we do, we will celebrate in Second Line. I guess we won't be hearing any Superbowl songs from Lil Wayne unless the Vikings win. This is sad for the fans in the city of New Orleans because they really thought Lil Wayne was down.

"Most entertainers and athletes don't realize that once you're in the spotlight, you need to think about some of the things that you say because it will follow you throughout your career, good or bad."

While everyone is entitled to root for whomever they want, I kinda feel Master P on this. While sports are simply used for entertainment purposes, the fact that it has my city's name in front of it is every indication that I'm rooting for them, no matter what. Think about people in Boise, ID or in Bizmarck, ND who don't have a team to call their own but would love to. Imagine if Philip Rivers and the Ravens were in the AFC Championship. I love my boo, but I love my squad more. At the same time, if Weezy is a diehard Favre fan, he should have thought twice before putting money on him. I'm just saying............

I'd be happy if we could just celebrate the abilities of the Saints team and stop belittling it w/the constant Katrina reminders. This franchise has far more ghosts to put to rest than a hurricane. Did we hear how the Giants winning the Super Bowl or the Jets recent run finally got the city over the terrible event of 9/11? This team got here because of their collective football skills, not because of a disaster. Saints fans have always been long-suffering and deserve this, don't get me wrong. But the players deserve the respect of remembering how good their skills are above all, not taking away from that w/natural disaster talk.

It shouldn't matter if Wayne was rooting for the Vikings or a team in the UFL, Master P bringing up Katrina sounds like a desperate plea for attention...on him.

you know in DC there is a bunch of Cowboys fans. Us Skins fans tolerate them, but we couldn't chastise them for rooting for the wrong team (lol) if DC had a hurricane. Freedom is an important right, and freedom of choice falls under that umbrella.

I could move to Texas and still rock my Skins gear...much like I did when I lived in Philly for a few...or visit BMore for whatever reason. Loving the town and the people is not the same as choosing what team to root for. Hopefully Wayne took the intelligent route and didn't respond.

This looks like a "eww hey look at me, put my name in the paper!!" move (although I do agree with him)

"This is our hope as a city after surviving Hurricane Katrina."

No, sir. This is the Saints' hope as a franchise after trying for 750 years. I agree with "brewers_rule". I too am tired of this Katrina angle everyone is using...it's been 5 years. If this were 2006 or even 2007, it'd be relevant, but it's not. Though Lil Wayne claims to "have New Orleans on his back", he can root for whatever team he wants. Granted the fact that he used "who dat" in his lyrics...he probably should have kept who he was cheering for between him and his loan sharks lol

Honestly I don't know how you can seperate the Saints from Katrina. That city was DEMOLISHED and while the Saints history is far from stellar, their success will forever be tied to N.O. recovering as a whole. The place is still struggling to pull itself back up so the team is one of the few bright spots.
