What The NFL Schedule Means To You

4

Category: , , ,

Football lovers, fanatics and fiends.... it's April! And two great NFL events happen in April (and NO I am not referring to the McNabb trade as one of them). Yes, I am talking about the NFL Draft and the release of the NFL schedule.

This is one of the most exciting times of the offseason. It's the time we start looking at who we play, when we play them, as well as our draft picks and counting down the days to training camp. If you live and breathe football, this is a month of good fortune.

With the release of the 2010 schedule coming out soon (blog sites and message board have been saying it will be released the end of the week or the beginning of next week, before the NFL Draft), there are a few things hardcore fans go through every single year. You know you're an NFL when you do one or all of the following things listed below:

Play The "Win-Loss" Game

Every year when the schedule comes out, I take a look at it for a few minutes and play the guesstimate game. I guess how many wins and losses the Ravens will have in the upcoming season. Now, usually I'm wrong as hell. Only a few times have I been close to being right (2006 is the last season that comes to mind, when I predicted they would be 12-4.... they were 13-3). But nevertheless, it's something I do. The way you determine wins and losses can be as simple as thinking you're better/worse than your opponent. Or it could mean you get real technical and factor in injuries and the schedule during a certain stretch. In any event, you do this and share your predictions with friends or message boards and compare. I don't know who came up with this idea. But it keeps people going until the NFL Draft the following week.

Potential Away Game Locations

If you're like me, you love going to away games. It's a 2-for-1 deal in my opinion. You get to take a weekend getaway out-of-town and you get to see your favorite team play in the process. Many of you already have vacation time set aside strictly for away games, all you need is the NFL schedule to come out so you can put in the time with your employer. Travel agencies and airlines pry on this date as well, as they know the interest peaks in certain cities during the NFL season, so football packages and flight inflation occur right after the schedule is released. I won't lie.. I'm waiting on the schedule release so I can confirm my arrangements for a potential away game as we speak. There is nothing like going to an away game and proudly displaying your teams colors in another team's stadium.

Plan Parties/Getaways Around Must-See Games

I don't make this stuff up, y'all. Yes, people actually to plan their actual life around the NFL season. If you think I'm lying, then think again. I've come across people who tried to change wedding plans, birthday parties and even some vacations due to a football game. If you're a Cowboys fan and you know they play the Redskins on October 22nd, you steer clear of any special events on that date, just so you can post up and watch watch your team play. One year, I planned my son's birthday party during the first week of the NFL season. Worst mistake of my life. People brought in handheld TVs and radios and didn't pay their kids any mind, they were so into the game. If anyone says this sounds absurd, they're probably right. Now if anyone says this doesn't happen, then they are either naive as hell or they are a liar.

To my fellow NFL friends, the schedule will be out soon. You will be free to plan all of your birthday gatherings, anniversaries, events, vacations and predictions when we finally know who our favorite team plays and when they play them. Are you ready for some football???? I sure am. Bring on the schedule!!!!

2009 NFL Draft's Most Eclectic Names

5

Category: , , ,

Okay, I know I'm not the only person that was in awe of some of the names that came out of this weekend's NFL Draft. When D'Brickashaw Ferguson was drafted by the NY Jets in 2006, I was like, "Wow! That's creative den a mug" (Ebonics had to kick in with that one LOL). But it seems as though every year, there are a new group of names that are .....well... you know.... "different". The type of name that makes your spell check go crazy when you type it in.

This is dedicated to all of the draft picks selected in this weekend's draft with those special names that only a mama could love. And in case any of their REAL mama's come across my blog, don't be mad... it's just COMEDY! It's all in fun!

Knowshon Moreno- RB, Georgia

Someone must've known he was gonna be hard headed before birth.. He already has "no" in his name, so it made the answer that much easier to give.. Saying "Yes Knowshon" sounds like an oxymoron...

Peria Jerry- DT, Ole Miss

I honestly thought they said "Perrier", as in the bottled water. Still, having a name close to bottle water must suck. That's like being named Avian.

Sen'Derrick Marks- DT, Auburn
Photobucket

This is a combo name, for sure. The mother's name and the father's name combined. Why else would his name be Sen'Derrick???

Lardarius Webb- CB, Nicholls St
Photobucket

See? How come his name couldn't be JUST "Darius"? Folks always gotta make it their own.

Kaluka Maiava- OLB, USC

Say what?!

Sammie Lee Hill- DT, Stillman

Photobucket

Nothing "eclectic" about it, but I won't lie, I laughed cause this is a Hatfield-McCoy type name.. real old school

Fenuki Tupou- OT, Oregon

What he said his name is..... *shrugs*

Jamon Meredith- OT, South Carolina

So Damon wasn't good enough, huh???

Bear Pascoe- TE, Fresno State

Please tell me this is a nick name?? If someone named their child Bear... I'ma fight 'em!

Stryker Sulak- DE, Missouri

He sounds like he should be in movies, not playing football

Ra'Shon Harris- DT, Oregon

Captain Munnerlyn- CB, S. Carolina

Jamarca Sanford- S, Ole Miss

Just when you thought the name "JaMarcus" was once in a lifetime!

Taufui Vakapuna- RB, BYU

Oh......okay!

Remember folks.. your child could be an NFL star one day... This could be YOUR child I'm poking fun of.

The NFL Chick's Frivolous Five Draft Picks- Circa 2000 Edition Vol. 1

Since Draft Day is only a few days away, let's take a look back at the draft picks from 2000-2008. I decided to give my Frivolous Five, players who were the worst picks during that time period. The ones that made the least significant impact during their tenure with the team that thought so highly of them that they drafted them in the first round. This can be debatable of course, because going through the drafts, there were quite a few busts which surprised me a little. So who made the list??? Let's take a look at numbers 5 and 4 from my Frivolous Five, shall we.

#5- Courtney Brown, DE Penn State
#1 overall pick by Cleveland Browns, 2000

I felt a certain way about putting Brown on this list. Mainly because it wasn't his play that puts him on this list, but injuries. Coming out of Penn State, Brown was regarded highly by a lot of GMs. When Cleveland picked Brown #1 overall in the 2000 draft, they were looking to get a cornerstone to their defensive scheme, which was only in their second year after the Browns returned to the NFL the year before.

Brown started off solid, with 70 tackles and 4 1/2 sacks during his rookie season. In his second season, Brown had 4 1/2 sacks in just 5 games, but was sidelined with injuries for the rest of the year. Then it all went downhill from there. He was never 100% from his 2nd year, on out, totaling 19 sacks in his NFL career. Ouch!

Brown went to the Denver Broncos in 2005 as a back up, and even contributed to the Broncos making the playoffs. But during the 2006 preseason, Brown tore his anterior cruciate ligament (aka, the ACL) in his knee and was out for the entire season. That's the last we've heard of Brown.

The guy had so much potential to be special, but injuries plagued him from becoming more. While I can understand why some may think he shouldn't be on this list, the hype is what got him to #5. You would've thought Brown was the second coming of the late Reggie White, with all of the praise he received. He didn't live up to it.

#4- David Carr, QB Fresno State
#1 overall pick by Houston Texans, 2002

Photobucket

When the Texans picked Carr out of Fresno St., the notion was that Carr was going to help the expansion Texans by having their QB of the present and future. Well...... they were wrong... real wrong.

I actually felt bad for him. He played with the worst offensive line I have ever seen in the history of football. He was sacked 76 times, a single season record, and they went 4-12 their first year. He never was able to get over the shell shock of not having anyone that could stop a pass rush. He had his moments, but Carr never emerged as the QB the Texans thought he would be.

In 2006, he had a career high completion pct at 68.9%, but that wasn't enough to keep him in Houston. The Texans finally parted ways with Carr at the end of the season. He then went to play for the Carolina Panthers as a backup. When QB Jake Delhomme went down with an elbow injury in 2007, Carr was named the starter. But he didn't do much there either, and by the 5th game of the season, Carr was dealing with injuries himself. He saw limited action throughout the rest of that season.

Carr is now with the NY Giants, backing up Eli Manning and earning a paycheck. He went from being the face of an expansion franchise, to backing up Peyton's baby brother. Had Carr gotten a little more help from his offensive line in the early years, who knows how this would have worked out. But they didn't... and he never recovered. Poor Carr.

Numbers 3 and 2 are coming up tomorrow... stay tuned!
