Someone really needs to send DeAngelo Hall a memo to STFU. In response to Sunday's loss to the Texans in OT( the Redskins were up 10 pts in the 4th quarter), Hall had this to say about Texans WR Andre Johnson:
"This is my first time going against him in the league. I gave him a lot of props during the game. During the game, he didn't scare me. He didn't do anything that looked spectacular. He didn't do anything to make me feel like he was the best.
"Maybe the numbers indicate he is, but I didn't feel that way when I lined up against him. He caught a lot of balls in zone and was just kind of running wide open in zones, not really man-to-man.
"We were hitting Schaub. We had him rattled. I felt like we were dominating those guys, hitting Schaub whenever we wanted to. He was falling down, you know, without anybody even around him, like Peyton Manningdoes a lot."
Oh really?!
Hall had a whole lot to say, especially about an offense that put up 526 yards against his defense. But let's be clear, Andre Johnson is a beast. One of the best WRs in the league right now, but not talked about often, mainly because he doesn't run his mouth like others in his position. Your defense coordinator played zone defense for a reason. Had your DC played tons of man coverage, you better believe Johnson would've had more than 158 yards. So playing zone was the best option from being exposed to the player you are..... In the words of Warren Sapp, "What I Miss???"
"I mean, those are his thoughts. The scheme that they ran, if he wanted to play me man-to-man, he should have told his coaches before the game. That's not my problem. For them to be running zone coverages like that with the safety over the top, and for me to still have 12 catches for 158 yards, somebody wasn't doing their job."
*snicker*
Note to DeAngelo Hall: Anytime a guy can catch 158 yards in a game, and grab the game-tying TD pass, he's as advertised. Give Johnson his props, he's damn good at what he does. Talking like this makes you sound foolish!
The regular season is officially over, and I must admit, I'm kinda sad..... end of regular season means post season which means Pro Bowl and Super Bowl which THEN means the season is over before we know it. That alone has me sad that the end is near. That being said, football still played this past weekend. So let's discuss, shall we? I'm getting all sentimental and whatnot.....
Congrats to my Baltimore Ravens for make the playoffs for the 2nd year in a row. My heart has been broken pretty much this whole season, and yet we still found a way to make it to the dance. Check out my post on Gridiron Gals about our win over the Oakland Raiders. I'm so proud of my guys.
*extra point* Hiram Eugene got OWNED!!!
Most people think that the NY Jets were given a pass for the playoffs, since both Indy and Cincy sat their starters for much of the game. And while that point is very well noted, lets be clear. Each team has the key to their own destiny. So if you are the Texans, Broncos, Steelers, Dolphins and Jaguars you can't be but so mad. You all have lost to teams that you probably should have blown out. Blame no one but yourselves for not getting the wins and losses in your favor.
*extra point* The Jets shouldn't be in the playoffs though. I'm just saying.... hey, everyone has a Rick James moment (see Dave Chappelle for clarification). This was mine.
Congrats to Titans Chris Johnson for getting 2,000 rushing yards, the 6th player to ever accomplish such a feat. Johnson also broke Marshall Faulk's NFL record of yards from scrimmage, with 2,509. I have said it before and I'll say it again. I like Adrian Peterson and all, but I'll take CJ any day of the week. Not only can Johnson make plays but he doesn't suffer from fumblitis.
Black Monday has come and as we expected, Danny Boy kicked Jim Zorn to the curb while en route to woo Mike Shanahan and family to get to town. I feel bad for Zorn, everything that went down was not all his fault. His offensive line is patchwork at best, he lost his best player on offense in Chris Cooley, his QB looks like a dear in headlights at times, and he had the laziest $100 million dollar man in Fat Albert, bad mouthing him because HE was late. He was destined to lose. And until Snyder lets someone take over the executive football duties and just sit in an owners box, I'm not sure if Jesus Christ himself could help. Good luck Shanahan. At least you'll get paid *shrugs*
*extra point* Bears fans, be patient with Lovie Smith. I know you expected big things this season. But any Broncos fan could have warned you about Cutler. Lovie deserves one last chance, and a couple of key players, and all of this will be laughable in the future.
What in the world is up with the G-Men the past 2 weeks?! In 2 weeks alone they have given up 85 points, 41 of them to a struggling Panthers team. I know the Giants have since fired their defensive coordinator as a result, but it will be interesting to see what they do during free agency and /or the draft, to help with the problems on defense.
DeSean Jackson needs to get the STFU Award of the week. Now you guys and gals know that I love Jackson, I think he's a dynamic player. But then Jackson turned around said the following on Twitter Sunday night,
"Got smashed by them cowboys 2daaaaaay sheeeeesh its all good we gonna sting they ass next week lil buddy..."
Come on dude, why are you on twitter talking crap? You just got SMASHED by the Cowboys, 24-0. I suggest you eat some humble pie until you actually beat them, since you haven't been able to do that all season. STFU dude!
Living in the DMV area, you have to acknowledge the Redskins. Although I'm a Ravens fan, the Redskins stadium is less than 40 miles away from M&T Bank Stadium, where the Ravens call home. So it is no surprise that I received emails and Facebook messages this morning regarding this morning's news. The people in Washington, D.C. couldn't have been anymore happier.
ESPN 980 in DC first reported that Vinny Cerrato, Executive VP of football operations, has resigned from his role with the Washington Redskins.
In a statement released by the team, Cerrato said, "We agreed that the franchise needs someone different in this position. I'm thankful to Dan Snyder and other members of his ownership team for the opportunities I've been given over the years."
For a lot of people in the area, this is great news. Fans have wanted a real GM to come in and bring in quality free agents as well as draft good players. But in all honesty, was Cerrato the real problem? I beg to differ if you say yes. This could mean nothing.
You see, Vinny is the fallout guy. He's always been known to be a "Yes Man" to owner Daniel Snyder, who's been working with the organization since Snyder bought the team 10 years ago. Snyder has not allowed anyone to come into this organization and make executive football decisions without his approval.
Remember, Snyder, hired Jim Zorn to be an offensive coordinator before even hiring a head coach. While Snyder eventually promoted Zorn to run the team, most head coaches bring in their own staff to run the team, yet an offensive AND defensive coordinator were in place prior to filling the head coaching vacancy.
Snyder is also a "win now" type of owner. He's been known to trade good draft picks for players, and loves to spend money on big name free agents to bring in the fans, as opposed to building from within. Remember Deion Sanders? Jeff George?? Adam Archuleta??? And although the Redskins picked up a future star in Brian Orakpo in this year's draft, he still did the Snyder-like thing, by bringing in DT Albert Haynesworth AKA the $100 million-dollar man. Haynesworth has been plagued with injury this season.
While Cerrato's resignation seems like a great notion, the fact remains that he did as he was told. Can Snyder allow a person with a great resume as a talent evaluator, finally come in and take over the team without the little-big man looking over his shoulder and adding his own input? That remains to be seen. In my mind, Cerrato is the scapegoat. But unless Snyder can bring in a Holmgren/Shanahan/Parcells type person to run the team fully without being a high paid gopher, then nothing's changed. Hopefully, he's taking strides to make some philosophical changes and relinquish some power over the team. Ahhhh, if only life can be so simple.
So long Cerrato. Who got next in the Redskins organization??
Model/Actress Liris Crosse celebrated her birthday with celebs and NFL friends. So who came through to celebrate with her?? Pigskin Loving Lady has all of the details on her event.
After Sunday's loss to the Kansas City Chiefs, Mind Pinball thinks the Washington Redskins went from bad to worse. Read here and see if you can agree or disagree with his point
MK Rob tells us Titans RB LenDale White has a new representative. Who can it be??? Find out here. I sure hope that person can help the Titans win games, SMH
Ed The Sports Fan thinks the Dallas Cowboys need Crazy Joe Clark. Click here to find out why. I thought they got rid of T.O. already????
Passing On The Game says that unless the Bucs do right by Matt Bryant, then field goals are going to continue to be shaky. Find out why he thinks there's Karma on the horizon.
Never in a million years did I think I would be saying this... the Ravens FINALLY get an offense and now their defense wants to tank???? With Ray Lewis and Ed Reed on the roster??? Something is horribly wrong with this picture. This team was finally supposed to be complete, and now the once proud defense is inept.. Ravens fans can't win for nothing. The bye week is coming and they better fix it if they want to even sniff the playoffs, or else.
-The Ravens-Vikings games was one of the most exciting and heartbreaking games I've yet to witness. More than the 2006 playoff loss to Indy (I'm JUST getting over that one). The Ravens fought so hard, coming from a 17 point deficit, and still came up short. Great game to watch if you have no interest or if you are a Vikings fan. But for a Ravens fan.. that one hurt bad.
*extra point* I'm gonna windmill Steve Hauschka when I see him :)
- The Saints are peaking... and looking more and more like the NFC representative for the Super Bowl, as I predicted. They beat the breaks off a great Giants team that has beat the breaks off of opponents themselves. Will they be in Miami come February, or are they peaking too soon??? Hmmmmmm
- G-Men... you'll bounce back. You're too good a team not to.
- Once again, the Redskins let a winless team get a win, as we all expected. I actually feel sorry for Redskins fans... no, this isn't a misprint. I do. I would be beyond fed up with mediocrity on and off the field. Dan Snyder needs to bring in a consultant to show him how to run an NFL franchise.. and I don't mean to the ground, either. It's pathetic and although I'm not a fan of the team, I am a fan of football. And even I am disgusted. This pic says it all:
- There really needs to be a "running up the score" rule. Explain to me why the Pats are up 45-0 at the half, yet Tom Brady trots right back onto the field at the beginning of the 3rd qtr??!! Is Belicheck serious?! What if Tennessee started to take shots at Brady and not care about the consequences??? Stupid, at best.
-There is a reason why Titans head coach Jeff Fisher isn't starting Vince Young. Even with Kerry Collins struggling at QB, Fisher continues to put him in. Word is, that Fisher deems Young as a quitter, especially after the shenanigans that happened at the beginning of the 2008 season. If that's true, then I totally respect Fisher's decision. I'd rather go down with the guys that go to battle with me than the ones that will wave the white flag, any day.
- Unless you are a fan of the Steelers, Browns, Lions, Packers, Rams, Jaguars, Bucs or Panthers, no one else cared about your game. Hey, I'm just saying........
- I got fussed at because I don't talk about the Eagles enough on my blog. Well, here it is: You let the RAIDERS beat you!!!! Better yet, you let JaMarcus Russell look like an NFL quarterback. Shame on you, Philly.. shame on you.
*extra point* Why is the pigeon going down the field with the Raiders the highlight of the game??? No seriously...........
-The Bills-Jets game was one of the hardest games for me to watch. I don't think I ever wanted to pull my eyelashes out, EVER. But I wanted to when CBS left the NE Massacre and went to this game. Remember that song you learned in school, "The Song That Doesn't End"... that game reminded me of that song... it just wouldn't stop.
- Am I the only one that thought Jay Cutler was gonna cry in the locker room at the end of the Bears- Falcons game??
- All the way around, the Denver Broncos are as complete of a team as any. They have an offense that moves the chains, a defense that is fearless and a special teams that is nothing short of awesome. Is Eddie Royal the 2009 Josh Cribbs/Donte Hall/Devin Hester of special teams??? We will find out as the season goes on.
- I think Orton should do a collabo song with Shaq. The title??
If you listen/watch ESPN's Mike and Mike In The Morning, then you know that Mike Golic and Mike Greenberg are pretty laid back personalities. But Mike Greenberg goes OFF on Redskins LB Robert Henson, who had some very disturbing tweets regarding Redskins fans this week.
Greeny goes ballistic on this guy, who tweets such ignorant things like, "The question is who are you to say you know what's best for the team and you work 9 to 5 at McDonald's. . . ."
Dude needs to sit his azz down for real, but Greeny already told him that, for me and others who thought dude was a little too sensitive. What makes it worse is, the guy didn't even play a down in the 2 regular season games the Redskins have played in. And while Henson has sense apologized and even disabled his twitter account, the damage has already been done.
Check out the segment. I love it. This is what talk radio is all about. Give it to him, Greeny! He deserves it.
With the trade talk going strong with Jay Cutler prior to being dealt to Chicago, some other QB's got thrown in the fire, Jason Campbell being one of them. What does he do now that Washington used him as trade bait to get Cutler to DC? Check out my thoughts about it
Every night before I go to bed and every morning when I wake up, I go to my phone, go to my online Football Section of the Baltimore Sun, and read the football news of the day. So imagine my surprise this morning when I read the title, "Skins, DT Haynesworth agree to seven year deal".
Really?!
Like seriously?!
I posted a blog not too long ago showing each team's cap space going into free agency, which officially starts today. The last time I checked, the Redskins were $3 million over the cap, not much room to do anything. Now, I don't follow them at all, so it's quite possible that some contracts were restructured and more money was available. But enough to pay this monster contract???
Did I fail to mention, they also re-signed DeAngelo Hall to a 6 year, $54 million contract as well?
This leads to my number 1 question of the off season: What's The Purpose Of Salary Cap???
When the CBA fell through and we were told that, if a new agreement doesn't come up, that there will be an uncapped season after the 2010 season, I was concerned. I root for a mid market team that uses the cap wisely, for the most part, and allows us to stay afloat and try and compete year end and year out. I thought to myself, an uncapped year meant the NFL was going to turn into MLB, with the Redskins and Cowboys buying up all of the top free agents available that year.
But after seeing a deal like this being made and no salary cap available to handle such a contract, I'm starting to think we are already in an uncapped NFL.
I've gone to numerous message boards, asked my most knowledgeable football friends and family, and I get nothing but *crickets*.
Apparently I'm not the only one that is a little confused by this.
I know that there is a such thing as cash over cap, which allows some wiggle room, but this is down right ridiculous.
I think I know the answer to the question, though. The NFL allows such deals for certain teams that have a lot of value to the league. Think about it... the Redskins are the NFL's most valuable franchise. They never have cap space, yet are always allowed to bring in high profile players. The team's success under owner Daniel Snyder has been dismal at best under this logic, but nonetheless he gets a pass because of the team's worth to the league.
This allows valued franchises like the Redskins and Cowboys to basically, do whatever they want, with mid and smaller markets playing by the rules, including the Super Bowl champion Pittsburgh Steelers.
The salary cap is a facade, nothing more or less. It doesn't hold weight. If it did, we wouldn't see this happen every year.
The owners are in a fraternity, of sorts. They tend to be buddy buddy with each other, so no one wants to challenge this to the commissioner. If they do, then they could face "payback" if they need leverage or support for future issues.
Maybe I'm way off with my scenario, but if anyone has the answer for this madness, then I'd love to hear it.
The salary cap is a joke...... unless someone can give me answers
